What does it take to build an effective Quality culture?

23.06.2023

Chris Bouffard put an interesting question on LinkedIn about building a strong quality culture and we would like to present the discussion that followed. It is amazing how much we can learn from our clients, candidates and connections about organisational culture and the ways it can be improved. Chris was discussing quality culture the other day with a respected senior Quality leader, and I asked him what he believed were the essential elements to building an effective culture, this was his response:

What does it take to build an effective Quality culture?

Leadership emphasis:

Managers told Quality is a leadership priority
They 'walk the walk'
Quality figures in staff evaluation

Message credibility:

Delivered from respected sources
Personal appeal
Consistent & easy to understand

Peer involvement:

Employees have a strong network of peers for guidance
Peers raise Quality as a key topic
Peers hold one another accountable

Employee ownership:

Workers understand their impact on Quality
Workers have means and empowerment to impact quality decisions
Staff are comfortable raising concerns about quality violations & challenging directives that detract from Quality

Do you agree with these?
Do you feel anything is missing?
What order should they be in, or are they all equally important?
